Raumschiff^WDebian Enterprise

The last week there was an announcement about DCC Alliance. It does suffer from the “Not invented here” syndrome.

-break->

There are plenty projects about Debian wanting to make it enterprise class, however, the main problem is in my opinion, that the original and base Debian is evolving just too slowly and the developers are not really adopting the changes from outside.

! ODP and submitting patches back
I had such a case with for example bash aswell, while I ran a project called ODP (Optimized Debian Project), which was a script collection for doing automatized whole recompilation of all of the packages with custom CFLAGS. When a compilation of a package failed, I could easily look into the logs and fix it. Then I tried to submit the patches back, I failed miserably… not even a response.

! Debian-Enterprise
“We could either base this on testing, doing snapshot
releases every 3-6 months, and offering security fixes, or on stable w/ various backports.”

This is from the D-E manifesto mail. How much of you have ever seen such releases from there? Dont let me guess…

! Ubuntu
Also there is the Ubuntu fame, and for some unknown reason it is not part of the DCC Alliance. However, just Mark Shuttleworth has more business power to fulfill his ideas then those DCC Alliance members together. But this is just my humble opinion.

! Is it a Linspire hack?
Two more interesting parts of the DCC, the contact person is some PR employee from Linspire and the partly dead UserLinux project is a member aswell.

(For those who dont understand the ^W, it means deleting the last word. Raumschiff Enterprise is the german title for the original Star Trek series.)
