CCV – Compact Component Video

Todays breakfeast time was spent searching for CCTV (Closed Circuit TV) pinouts – the [Philips cam|http://www.artificis.hu/node/23] I wrote about eariler uses something similar.

No good matches on CCTV, but nice ones generally on S-Video and Composite video, which I am extensively using in my work projects. Hopefully I dont say much top secret information, but my project is about Linux combined on a custom DVB SetTopBox.

This was the introduction, now comes the real part.

Everyone knows about the quality what composite has (not) versus S-Video. While the latter is much better, still not too complete, because it combines the two chrominance (color) channels: Cb (blue) and Cr (red).

In most cases it has good quality, but what if we are using some higher sampling rate, like 4:4:4 instead the usual 4:2:2 (YUV422, used on TV).

This proposal is about combining component video and s-video into one connector. I selected the 6 pin mini din connector which is commonly used by PS/2 mouse and keyboards.

Use all the 6 pins, every 2 pins are making up one channel, like Y/Cr/Cb and appropriate ground lines. In Y/Cr/Cb channels should be shielded, and the shield should be the ground lines. I call this CCV aka Compact Component Video.

Actually this will be never implemented, but IMHO it is a nice idea, I had to write it down. Feel free to comment per email or per comments (you need to register or the like).
