Windows Live, live.com & live555.com
Now you may ask how all these relate? Easy.
Since like 1995, live.com was used by Live Networks, Inc, a company doing multimedia streaming libraries and applications.
The library was called “LIVE.COM Streaming Media” and was used under this name in MPlayer. On 2005/09/15 Ross Finlayson (the guy behind these, who is also actively maintaining the support for the libraries in MPlayer) committed a patchset to our CVS, with the following message: “LIVE.COM Streaming Media” is now called “LIVE555 Streaming Media”.
It was strange. After all the guy was really up with his domain name. Owning such a basic one. He changed the name everywhere in our source, like trying to remove history.
The other strange point was that both domains were pointing to the same place, and working til the last days.
And what news comes today? Windows Live @ live.com. And I should n’t think that the guy made hilarious money out of it. Nice shot after all :)
Update: may I be a bit paranoid, but the presonal homepage of Ross is 403 now. It was working like 3 days before. Is he hiding?!
Update: interesting entry: “Also, Windows Live (http://www.live.com) seems to be a clean up of My MSN”. And this is supposed to be the blog of the live.com authors.
